➤➤ Welcome to the Crazy #MomBoss Series — Inspirational interviews + features of fellow mompreneurs who have started successful side-hustles, or are living the full-time entrepreneur life by growing their online businesses.

Meet Christine Pham

This interview holds a special place in my heart, not only because Christine is one of my dear friends, but because she’s a fellow mompreneur that has managed to take one of the biggest “pain points” of parenthood —  crappy baby sleep — and turn it into a business that helps other zombie-faced moms & dads take back their lives!

Christine is a mama to 2 girls (ages 3 years, and 6 months) from Ontario, Canada. After clawing her way out of sleepless nights with her little ones, she has launched a side-hustle as a Sleep Consultant with WeeSleep, helping families achieve restful sleep using supportive and gentle methods.

How did you decide to start this business?

My first daughter was NOT sleeping well for the first 6 months of her life! The constant sleep deprivation caused irritability, stress and anxiety, which led to constant arguments with my husband and really took a toll on our lives. At the end of my rope, I finally decided to sleep training our baby. It helped tremendously!

Prior to this, I’d been working an 8-4 job at a hospital in Rehabilitation Services for 10+ years. When I returned after my maternity leave, juggling my healthcare job and taking on the bulk of childcare still felt really stressful. I wanted more flexibility, and knew I had to make a change — This led me to discover my passion for baby sleep!

After my own successful sleep-training experience, I knew I wanted to help other tired moms and dads get their baby sleeping too. So I took the next steps towards becoming a certified Sleep Consultant. I truly believe sleep is such an integral part of our lives. It’s crucial for our well-being and mental health.

What was the biggest hurdle you experienced when first getting started?

Balancing my work + personal life along with my side-hustle! With the birth of my second daughter, I’m once again on maternity leave. I knew I wanted to be present for the first year of her life as I was for my first born.

I also think getting yourself out there and educating others on what you do is challenging because it’s not something I’m used to doing. I know that gaining the confidence to do so will come with time and experience. I’m constantly thinking, “where do I start?”

What was the biggest financial challenge you’ve experienced in your business?

Getting a solid handle over my family’s personal finances, while investing in my business! So many life changes have happened since I started: We just moved, had a second baby, and my husband is transitioning into a new business of his own.

In Canada, we’re fortunate to have great maternity benefits, and I’m also collecting maternity benefits from my hospital job for one year, which makes up about 90% of my regular income. I’m planning on using this money to fund my business.

Charlene’s TIP:  I recommend bootstrapping as much as you can in the beginning, and setting aside at least 3-6 months’ worth of estimated operating expenses so that you have a comfortable amount of starting capital — Read more here

Who are your entrepreneurial role models?

Janey Reilly, the founder and CEO of WeeSleep. She is an amazing #MomBoss full of experience and knowledge. I’ve completed her training, and will be mentored by her as I help babies and their families get sleep! She has worked so hard to build her brand and helped other consultants launch their own successful careers. My fellow Sleep Consultants are a great and inspiring group of women I’m so grateful to be connected with.

I also got inspired watching a speech by Randy Pausch about his book, “The Last Lecture” — It’s about living life properly and pursuing your dreams.

What do you wish more people knew about you or what you do?

sleeping baby

I want people to see me as an honest, hardworking mama on a mission! I’m a serious sleep advocate and preach about the benefits of sleep, not only for babies’ growth and development, but for the well-being of adults as well.

A sleeping baby means sleeping parents! The sky’s the limit as to what you can do when your babe sleeps — and that could be on a personal or professional level.

What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out?

Take a risk! Otherwise, you’ll never know what could happen. Love what you do and let your passion guide you. Immerse yourself into your chosen path and go hard 110%. Surround yourself with others who inspire and push you forward.

Good sleep is the main reason why I am able to “work” doing what I love to do. With both kids in bed by 7:30pm, knowing that they won’t make a peep till the morning, I can have more time to myself, spend more time with my husband, catch up with girlfriends or build my business — the freedom means having a choice between endless possibilities!

Charlene’s Two Cents

As a mompreneur, I can attest that the early years of your child’s life take a HUGE toll on your energy levels and mental health. These challenges were one of the main reasons I decided to switch directions in my first business.

What Christine does resonates with me on so many levels — It’s easy for many of us working mamas to constantly wallow in a sleep-deprived state of self-pity, feeling defeated and accepting bad sleep as a normal part of #momlife.

Christine took steps to BE the change she was seeking. She channeled the success from her own personal sleep struggles, and turning it into a business she now uses to help others! LOVE IT! 🙌
